A Visual Designer Reflects on Flagship Species. How a More-Than-Human Approach Can Help Reframing Our Relationship With Nature

Today, climate change and biodiversity loss are among the main threats to the biosphere and future generations. By prioritizing a human-centered approach, designers become one of the critical actors in this era that, despite aiming to promote environmentally conscious practices, they rely on methodologies that revolve around the human perspective.

This thesis explores biodiversity loss through a more-than-human lens. It represents a designer’s reflection on endangered species and their conservation, with a particular focus on the Italian butterfly Maculinea Alcon, which, due to its complex biology, represents a suitable example of flagship species threatened by climate change and human activities.

The goal of this research is to offer designers an information platform and an example of an exploration that led to the creation of an icon, able to symbolize a method to design beyond human-centered thinking, based on non-linear thinking and an interspecies view in the analysis of the problem.
