Recalibrating Sense of Place

The thesis “Recalibrating sense of place” explores the function of place perception in images and at the same time explores how digital tools shape the perception of places that are produced in the image. A place can visually be expressed as something as simple as naked materials to experiences in the form of digital interactions. The effect of having various forms of place depictions causes us to have different understandings of both image and place.

Even though we have a relatively good understanding of how we interact with environments, there is a push to explore our understanding of places further as technological advancements bring new questions to the front.
With the questions, “How can intangible aspects of place be represented visually?” and “To what extent can other mediums aid in visual place -representations?”, the thesis explores the problems of visual place perception and at the same time probe the questions through technical devices that are common in visual communication today.
