Masquerade beyond Boundaries. The Art of Protesters and Outsiders

The concept of the carnivalesque is a defining characteristic of protest and occupy movements worldwide. Protest Art has long been admired by the art world but remains outside its formal boundaries. The art world has yet the controlled space of Outsider Art where all sorts of foolishness, freedom, and freakishness by outsiders is allowed, just like in a carnival. At this “Feast of Fools”, the free creative outbursts of marginalized and excluded people challenge existing boundaries, standards, and hierarchies, turning convention on its head by creating a colourful masquerade where rebels and outsiders can become artists.
