Plastic is currently the most harmful waste that is thrown away. In 2015, our global plastic consumption was estimated at 298 million tons, and 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year.
The performance addresses both the problem of plastic pollution in the oceans and the fashion industry, particularly fast fashion, and highlights the impact it is having on changing human behavior.
I made a dress with a long train out of 158 plastic bags and then used it for an alternative fashion show in which the "model", whose appearance embodies the anti-diva, interprets the role of the dress in different cultures. The staging looks appealing at first, but gradually creates a sense of unease as the protagonist becomes increasingly enveloped in plastic until she suffocates and then falls lifelessly to the floor.
