Reartefaktung Merzbau (Kurt Schwitters)
(2022)

https://www.martingschicht.net

Kurt Schwitters was a very versatile artist who also worked intensively with space. Especially with his so-called Merzbau, which he extended rampantly through the apartment in his house in Hanover, he dealt with space. The Merzbau is an artistic and precisely non-architectural preoccupation with space. Schwitters' self-image as both an Expressionist and a Constructivist would also be an approach here to bring together the architectural antipodes of Mies van der Rohe and Hans Scharoun in an innovative way. The Merzbau was completely destroyed in an air raid during the Second World War. A new house was built on the site in the second half of the 20th century. Schicht, Martin G.; however, suspected charred remains of the Merzbau in the soil of the garden. He removed soil from there in 2019. As an experimental archaeologist, he made an elongated wooden triangle, a typical basic shape of the Merzbau. The wood was charred and rubbed with soil from the garden of the former Merzbau.
