The project "Como un río. No puedes dividirlo" ("Like a river. You can't divide it") was the result of six months of research in Mexico City on the question of cultural identity. Originally conceived as a live performance, the work was presented in June 2016 in the colonial villa Casa Maauad and recorded on video. Based on the filmed material, a 1-channel video installation was created in collaboration with Studerus, Gabriel.

Using the example of Mexico, the work examines how identities are formed in a heterogeneous society shaped by colonization. The project focuses on the process of approaching a foreign culture from a European perspective. Misunderstandings, misjudgements and projections form an important part of the discussion. Through a loose series of monologues, dialogues and faceless statements, questions are negotiated that represent a Western-oriented way of thinking: Who is considered indigenous? Who is a colonialist? What identity follows from self-definition as a mestizo? Why is Christian identity of existential importance in Mexico? What is the purpose of identification with the deceased? The text is based on numerous interviews as well as personal conversations and experiences. The production was developed in collaboration with Bernardo Gamboa and Meraqui Pradis.
