Belluard Bollwerk
(1983-2021)

The Belluard Bollwerk festival was born in Fribourg in 1983 out of the emptiness and desire of a group of friends to build worlds where other artistic and human possibilities could emerge. Its home is the medieval fortress of Belluard, to which it owes its name and singular identity.
Non-consensual, multi-faceted, hybrid, innovative and disruptive, since its inception it has reflected on the profound nature of art and the role it plays in our lives. Open to the international scene and to his bilingual city, he has always acted as a go-between for artists and audiences.
Led by programming collectives and regularly renewed artistic directors, the Belluard Bollwerk has also consistently played a pioneering role in the way the performing arts and contemporary artistic practices are viewed. Many of the great names in dance, theater, performance, music and the visual arts have performed in this memorable fortress. Sun Ra, Raimund Hoghe, Kazu Ono, Jérôme Bel, Alain Platel, Florentina Holzinger and, more recently, the ouinch ouinch collective and Pauline L.Boulba have all presented their work here.
The almost forty editions of the Belluard Bollwerk tell the story of a practice of programming and transforming spaces that is marked by great freedom, and by a particular attention to the creation and invention of situations for sharing and encounter.
It is an essential meeting place for the practice of performance art and for the possibility of its emergence.
