Detox Dance
(2016-2020)

https://www.romajamsession.org

Detox Dance is a participatory performance with the character of a square dance. The performance is led by lead dancers who are friends of the collective. Roma Jam Session worked with five to eight dancers at the beginning of the project via a call on social media (FB) to get started. We rehearsed together with them so that the group could later perform in public spaces or in an institution and lead the interested audience. For the square dance, our choreography was designed to be easy to learn, and together with Esther Maria Häusler we put together our gestures and some movements from our daily movement repertoire to create a dance sequence that contains sequences from martial arts as well as fragments from Roma dances. Esther has written down this learnable sequence. One dance lasts just over 8 minutes. It is repeated for the audience and everyone is invited to join in. Detox Dance is a fluid sculpture in a public space, in a cultural space, in an institution. It is a temporary sculpture built by anyone interested in liquefying fossilized images, here specifically those of the Roma community, by performing them
