PUBLIC THIS-PLAY
(2017)
https://www.raefae.li
The PUBLIC THIS-PLAY campaign by Rafael Lippuner & Dimitri Fischer brings fresh sounds to the carillon of the Zofingen Stiftturm. Unusual melodies and jingles - from familiar cell phone ringtones to film and video game music to Dave Brubeck, Wu-Tang or Deep Purple - echo through the streets of the old town and make passers-by sit up and take notice.
During the six-week exhibition, visitors to the Kunsthaus decide which songs will be played on Saturdays. The available songs can be listened to in specially constructed voting booths and the votes are placed in an urn. Beyond the musical intervention, the action pursues a public-political discourse based on the question of who decides on the sounds in public space, in everyday life. It not only expands the classical framework of bell singing, but also breaks with the usual performance formats and the role of the art institution.
