scents of kitchen
(Bern 9.9.2012 / Frauenfeld 17.11.2003)

https://www.maxbottini.ch

Max Bottini (kitchen) interacting with saxophonist Räto Harder. The performance "scents of kitchen" was an experiment in linking olfactory and auditory perception. It plays with the fact that olfactory experiences linked to images are stored in the human brain and can be recalled when appropriately stimulated. The attempt to musically interpret the scents produced during the act of cooking lends the performance a synaesthetic dimension. The performance is based on a written "scent-music score", which is to be understood as a scenically structuring basic framework. It leaves enough space for the improvisational interplay between the chef and the saxophonist. The performative act of cooking focuses on the "by-products" of cooking - the smells. These are created with the help of numerous foods and ingredients at 16 cooking stations, with each combination or scent being given its own weight. Eight fans deliver "the kitchen smells" to the audience in a targeted and timed manner.
