"throw down the gauntlet" was a group performance with seven performers. This ritual-like performance was created on the occasion of the ironic 140th birthday of the art space Counter Space in Zurich. The participants all wore pink silicone cleaning gloves. At the time, the Counter Space was at eye level with a pedestrian bridge spanning the busy Rosengartenstrasse. With a determined look, the participants walked across this very bridge towards the large window front of the art space. They clenched their hands into fists several times, stretching them as if they were getting ready for a brawl. The silent hustle and bustle was accompanied by the shrill sound of a gong. Having just been on the opposite bridge, the performers appeared in the actual art space at the stroke of midnight. The challenging hand gestures continued, sometimes focusing on a randomly selected person. One by one, the performers began to throw their gloves at the feet of these people. The performance ended with the last dropped glove. According to Wikipedia: The expression as a compound of the words feud and gauntlet first came about in the 18th century, when it was customary to slap a cloth glove in the face of one's opponent to challenge him to a duel of honor.
