Körper als Material

Body as Material is an artistic experiment that was created as part of the exhibition Body, Flower, Water, Grass by the painter Andriu Deplazes at the Kunstverein Friedrichshafen (Germany). At the center of the work is the question of how the body can be perceived as a material beyond common attributions. Two trained dancers, unknown to each other, aged 21 and 72 respectively, met in seven guided sessions using the sensory organs of touch, smell, hearing and taste. Without seeing each other, they explored the materiality of each other's bodies. After each session, the dancers recorded their thoughts in writing and were interviewed by the instructor for fifteen minutes. Body as Material was presented as a performance and lecture at the Kunstverein Friedrichshafen. The performance allowed visitors to participate in the dancers' physical investigations without comment. The lecture presented the structure, course and results of the experiment: The work process confronted the subjects with body images that they had internalized through their socialization and dance training. This forced the two of them to re-examine their physical self-image. Body as material also functioned as basic research for further works and provided insights into how physical material studies can be made fruitful for artistic processes. Text: Max Enderle
