Abstract
KAP issue no. 44 is dedicated to Saan Sense, a project by Womanifesto in which hammocks play a central role. In July 2026, sixteen artists, four dogs, and two water buffalo shared space and time for a month at Baan Womanifesto located in rural Isaan region, northeast Thailand. Hammocks hanging outside homes or at the edge of rice farms became the focus of their attention. They began creating situations involving hammocks, exchanging old hammocks for new ones in the villages of Baan Phue and Baan Khi. Along with the exchange – the swap of goods has traditionally been an important way to sustain daily life in villages here – they also invited people for workshops to learn how to knot hammocks from textile-industry remnants. The communities of the two villages are home to the collectives - Womanifesto and Mahasarakham Mid-field Artspace respectively. This is why we have given this KAP the title ‘Khi And Phue’. We invited all artists involved in Saan Sense project to contribute an artistic commentary, expressing what had been particularly meaningful to them during the time we spent together. The publication also contains two collectively drawn maps initiated by Varsha Nair and Ananya Patel, of the communities and our interactions in the villages. The accompanying QR codes lead to videos documenting the process. The video from Baan Phue was edited by Virginia Hilyard, and the video from Baan Khi by Adisak Phupha. In a film tutorial, Mina Ueareeworakul demonstrates how to knot hammocks—and, in doing so, how to keep creating new connections. These connections come together in another page, a collection of images relating our collective dwelling – snapshots of the liminal spaces, memories and conversations that unfolded over shared time. For the cover of this publication, we used as a template the wrapper of cigarette papers that Nitaya Ueareeworakul uses to roll her evening cigarettes. This paper, available in local shops, comes in a red packet bearing the image of a rooster. In the past special roosters were trained by Nitaya’s father for cockfighting on the farm before it became Baan Womanifesto. Today, connections are being woven here between individuals.
With this publication we want to remember the time we spent together in the summer of 2026, which, in retrospect, shimmers almost like a mirage. The four weeks were so special that we wish there were a recipe for them. Perhaps this KAP can at least offer a glimpse of the ingredients that made those days exceptional.
