The [32] unnumbered plates are etchings by Sébastien Leclerc, the 1st of which bears title: Figures d'academie pour aprendre à désiner, grauées par Sebastien LeClerc (A Paris Chez N. Langlois, rue St. Jacques à la Victoire). They were produced around 1665 and appeared previously with Charles-Alphonse Du Fresnoy's L'art de peinture, translated by Roger de Piles (Paris : Nicolas Langlois, 1673). See BN; Signatures: a A-H; BN. Dépt. des estampes. Fond français, XVIIe siècle; Getty copies 1 & 2 lack all plates. Copy 3 lacks one of Leclerc's plates, called for by BN (no. 1071, depicting John the Baptist); it includes an engraved frontispiece, not part of the present work, with imprint of Charles Antoine Jombert, Paris, 1751; Binding, c. 1: sprinkled calfskin; spine tooled in gilt, abbreviated title on label; edges of boards rolled in gilt; page edges sprinkled red. Signatures on t.p. of Gaucher, Chevilley, and J. Foucon, the last dated 28 Sept. 1780 at Langres; Binding, c. 2: as c. 1, apparently by the same binder. Inscription on front pastedown and facing endpaper, which begins: Ministère de la marine et des colonies. Liste, par ordre de mérite des élèves nommés à l'école navale par décision du ministère de la marine du 16 octobre 1843... [followed by 50 names]. Ulrich Middeldorf's printed label.
